Sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison on "terrorist propaganda" charges due to her participation in the Özgür Gündem solidarity campaign, journalist Ayşe Düzkan was sent to prison today, after the upper court upheld her sentence.
Ayşe Düzkan was among five journalists who were sentenced to prison on "terrorist propaganda" in 16 January 2018, due to their participation in the solidarity campaign launched by the now-shuttered pro-Kurdish Özgür Gündem daily. İstanbul 13. High Criminal Court had sentenced Düzkan to 1 year in prison, which was extended to 1 year and 6 months on the grounds that she "committee the offense through the press".
Düzkan, whose sentence was upheld by the appeal court on 29 November 2018, went to Çağlayan Courthouse today and was later transferred to Bakırköy Women's Prison.
Düzkan, gave a brief statement to the press today before the courthouse. She said, “There are so many political prisoners who have been imprisoned for a very long time. I got 18 months. If I don't blow my deferral, I'll serve one year. So it's just a drop in the bucket." (Source: Gazete Karınca)
