Journalist Neşe İdil fined for insulting former Minister Derya Yanık on social media

Journalist Neşe İdil was sentenced to a judicial fine for calling former Minister of Family and Social Services Derya Yanık a "clown" on social media. The Istanbul Anadolu 8th Criminal Court of First Instance, which handled the case, issued its detailed ruling, stating that although İdil argued the term was used as criticism, the word "clown" exceeded the boundaries of acceptable criticism and damaged the plaintiff’s dignity.

Citing similar rulings from 2019 by the Istanbul Regional Court of Appeals, the court sentenced İdil to a fine of 14,160 Turkish Lira, calculated as 354 days at 40 TL per day. Given that İdil had no prior criminal record and was deemed unlikely to reoffend, the court suspended the announcement of the verdict. If İdil avoids committing any offenses during the five-year probation period, the case will be dismissed.
