Journalist Sedef Kabaş's trial for "insulting the president" postponed

The trial of journalist Sedef Kabaş, who is facing charges of "insulting the president" over 25 social media posts, was postponed as the court awaits final rulings in related cases. The sixth hearing of the case was held at Istanbul Anadolu 2nd Criminal Court of First Instance.

At the hearing on Feb. 25, 2025, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's lawyer, Mustafa Ünnal, and Kabaş’s lawyer, Selen Sınmaz, were present. Kabaş's defense cited a ruling by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in the case of Vedat Şorli and demanded her immediate acquittal. Erdoğan's lawyer stated that their complaint remains in place.

The court determined that Kabaş’s case is linked to trials ongoing at Istanbul 36th Criminal Court of First Instance and Istanbul Anadolu 7th Criminal Court of First Instance. It ruled to wait for the final decisions in those cases before proceeding. The next hearing is scheduled for June 19, 2025.
