The Media and Law Studies Association (MLSA) is set to present its 2024 Journalism and Freedom of Expression Trial Monitoring Report on November 22. The report, the most comprehensive trial monitoring program in Turkey, covers 281 cases and 614 hearings observed between September 1, 2023, and July 20, 2024.
Nobel Peace Prize-winning journalist Maria Ressa will deliver the opening remarks, titled “Judicial Harassment of Journalists Worldwide,” setting the stage for a critical discussion on press freedom in Turkey. MLSA meticulously documented the legal challenges faced by journalists, activists, politicians, and students, exposing widespread violations of fair trial principles and rights to freedom of expression and the press. The report reveals that a significant number of these cases stem from criticism of state authorities and participation in public protests, with laws on counterterrorism and defamation being used to exert pressure on media professionals and activists. The denial of fair trial rights emerges as a key factor impacting trial outcomes.
Following the presentation, a panel discussion on “Judicial Harassment Against Freedom of Expression in Turkey” will be moderated by MLSA Co-Director Evin Barış Altıntaş. Panelists include Eren Keskin, Co-Chair of the Human Rights Association; Gülsüm Kav, General Representative of the We Will Stop Femicide Platform; and journalist Tolga Şardan of T24. The panel will address the judicial pressures faced by minorities, the women’s movement, and the media.
The event begins at 5:30 p.m. and will be streamed live on MLSA TV’s YouTube and Twitter channels.
