The 2023 MLSA Freedom of Expression Trial Monitoring Program Report will be published this week. The report includes findings from 233 cases involving a total of 1646 defendants, monitored during the September 2022 - September 2023 judicial year, as part of MLSA's trial monitoring program on freedom of expression cases since 2018.
The Media and Law Studies Association's trial monitoring program is the most comprehensive trial monitoring program to analyze trial procedures and standards in Turkey.
The 2023 MLSA Trial Monitoring Program Report will be published at a launch event on 22 December 2023. Following the launch, the report will be published on the mlsaturkey.com website.
The data used in the report was collected through a "Trial Monitoring Form" filled out by observers, mostly journalists with training and experience in trial monitoring. The form, which the observers completed after each hearing, was developed with the guidance and recommendations of organizations such as the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Amnesty International, the International Committee for Jurists and the Solicitors International Human Rights Group (SIHRG).
The aim of this program is to record compliance with national and international standards and possible violations in the context of the right to a fair trial, which is recognized as an inalienable human right by many international conventions and treaties to which Turkey is a party, particularly the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the 1950 European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and the 1966 United Nations Covenant on Political and Civil Rights, and to reveal the current situation in cases involving the freedoms of the press, assembly and expression.
