The Media and Law Studies Association (MLSA) has filed an appeal against the detention of journalists Yıldız Tar and Elif Akgül, as well as the confidentiality order imposed on their case, the seizure of their digital materials, and the 24-hour ban on lawyer access.
Tar and Akgül were among more than 50 people detained this morning in a series of police raids centered in Istanbul. Turkey’s Interior Ministry stated that the operation targeted the Peoples' Democratic Congress (HDK), a political organization affiliated with Kurdish and leftist movements.
Authorities have not officially disclosed the charges against Tar and Akgül, and a confidentiality order has been placed on the case. Additionally, the journalists have been barred from meeting with their lawyers for 24 hours.
MLSA’s legal team has objected to their detention and the restrictions imposed on the case, arguing that the measures violate press freedom and due process. Press organizations have condemned the operation as an attempt to silence journalists and have called for the immediate release of Tar and Akgül.
