Turkey: Foreign agent law withdrawn-for now

Turkey's roposed foreign agent legislation, which faced widespread criticism from Turkey's media and civil society, was withdrawn on its first day in the plenary session of Turkey’s parliament on 12 November.

MLSA's Veysel Ok has recalled that this is the second time the government has pulled back foreign agent legislation, adding that there is no indication they won't attempt to bring it again in the future.

The recent one which was introduced on October 18th foresaw a potential prison sentence of up to seven years for offenses committed in favor of a foreign government or organization's interests.

Critics argues that the legislation resembles foreign agent laws recently enacted in Georgia and Russia.

Although Turkey’s civil society is experiencing a sense of relief, MLSA advises its partners to remain cautious, as the legislation is likely to be reintroduced in parliament.
