A workshop titled “Training for Lawyers: Human Rights Mechanisms” took place in Prague between 5-8 March 2019. The training was organized and hosted by the Central and Eastern European Law Initiative (CEELI) in partnership with Media and Law Studies Association (MLSA) and the Human Rights’ Association (İHD).
The workshop brought together human rights lawyers from Turkey, expert jurists who also contribute to the operations of MLSA’s Lawyers Network on media freedom, and many other lawyers who work on freedom of speech cases either in legal practice or in academia.
The workshop focused on the following issues: procedures of individual applications to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR), admissibility criteria, interim measures, as well as the European Human Rights Convention’s (ECHR) Articles 5, 6, 11, 18 and individual applications to the United Nations Human Rights Committee.
German lawyer Stefan von Raumer, Strasbourg-based Centre de la Protection attorney Anna Maralyan, Russian lawyer Karinna Moskalenko, Marina Makarova who has worked at ECtHR, and Mahmut Can Şenyurt, who is currently working at the Court contributed to the workshop with their insightful presentations. Following these presentations, lawyers from Turkey gave examples from their experiences regarding ECtHR jurisprudence, criminal procedure in Turkey, and defense methods.
Lawyers Hürrem Sönmez, Pınar Konak, Ümit Kılınç, Yılmaz Özgür Biçen, Barış Oflas, Nurcan Kaya, Kerem Dikmen, Doğuşcan Aydın Aygün and MLSA Legal Unit’s Veysel Ok and Zelal Pelin Doğan were among those who participated in this comprehensive training. As a result of this tightly packed training program, lawyers were able to exchange their professional experiences with each other and improved their skills and knowledge regarding specific points to pay attention to while filing individual applications with the ECtHR.
