In the retrial of the Gezi Park case, Mücella Yapıcı, Ali Hakan Altınay, and Yiğit Ali Ekmekçi were acquitted due to a lack of "conclusive and sufficient evidence."
The Istanbul 13th High Criminal Court ruled on their acquittal after Turkey’s Court of Cassation overturned their previous 18-year prison sentences. The three were accused of violating Turkey’s Law No. 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations.
During the fifth hearing of the retrial, the prosecutor presented the final opinion, noting that Mücella Yapıcı had already been tried and acquitted of the same charge by the Istanbul 33rd High Criminal Court, with the ruling finalized. The prosecutor stated that there was no solid evidence proving the defendants had committed the alleged crime and requested their acquittal.
The defense attorneys agreed with the prosecutor's assessment, reiterating their previous statements. Tora Pekin, one of the defense lawyers, criticized the legal process, calling the case "one without legal security."
After a recess, the court ruled that there was no definitive and sufficient evidence to prove the charges beyond reasonable doubt, leading to the acquittal of all three defendants.
