Journalists Yıldız Tar and Ercüment Akdeniz, who were arrested on Feb. 21 as part of an investigation into the People's Democratic Congress (HDK), have sent a message from prison. In statements relayed through Media and Law Studies Association (MLSA) Co-Director Veysel Ok, the journalists emphasized that their work is not a crime and expressed gratitude for the solidarity shown to them.
“Journalism is not a crime”
Yıldız Tar condemned the imprisonment of journalists, stating:
"It's our turn to take over the Silivri watch. As journalists, we are being sent in and out of prison one after another. But we can never accept this as normal. Journalism is not a crime. Sending love to everyone showing solidarity. Truth will always prevail. Life goes on despite hatred!"
Ercüment Akdeniz echoed this sentiment, saying:
"Journalism is not a crime. Whether inside or outside, we will continue to practice peace journalism. Thanks to all friends who have asked about us and supported us. Hoping to meet again in better days."
“Their morale is high, and solidarity continues”
According to Veysel Ok, who visited the journalists in prison, both Tar and Akdeniz are in good health and high spirits. Ok stated that they are staying in a ward without any major issues and that their fellow inmates have shown them support and solidarity.
Background
On Feb. 18, the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office issued arrest warrants for 60 people, leading to the detention of 52 individuals. Police raids targeting HDK in 10 provinces resulted in the arrest of 30 people, including leftist party officials and journalists Elif Akgül, Yıldız Tar, and Ercüment Akdeniz.
Thirteen individuals were placed under house arrest, while seven others were released under judicial supervision.
The journalists were reportedly questioned about wiretaps from as far back as 2012, their meetings with news sources and editors, and the protests they had covered.
