MLSA journalism workshop brought experts and young journalists together
Between October 1 – 4, the Media and Law Studies Association (MLSA) organized a workshop titled “Journalism in a Changing World: Between Professional Principles and Contemporary Reality” with the support of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation on the Asian side of Istanbul in Polonezköy. 15 young journalists from different provinces and institutions came together with the professionals Tuğrul Eryılmaz, Gökçer Tahincioğlu, Banu Tuna, Can Ertuna and lawyer and MLSA co-director Veysel Ok to upgrade their skills for their professional future.  The three-day MLSA Media Academy that took place within the scope of the COVID-19 measures, Tuğrul Eryılmaz introduced the principles of journalism and news writing to the participants.  T24 Ankara representative Gökçer Tahincioğlu and Banu Tuna, the Istanbul Branch Chair of the Journalist Union of Turkey (TGS) who has also worked for many years as correspondent and editor for Hürriyet newspaper, held a workshop on news writing techniques, gender-focused journalism and interview methods.  Experienced TV reporter Can Ertuna, who has been a correspondent for NTV for many years, organized two workshops on mobile journalism and reporting in conflict areas. In one session of the academy, the free speech and press freedom lawyer Veysel Ok informed the participants about media regulations in Turkey and also explained how they can protect themselves from increasing judicial harassment.  The 15 participants came from various provinces in Turkey such as Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Eskisehir, Ordu and Antalya and work for diverse media organizations such as Artı Gerçek, Gazete Fersude, Demirören News Agency and Mesopotamian News Agency. During the academy, they not only discussed the changing media industry and the pressure on journalists in Turkey with the instructors but also prepared news reports in practical workshops.
