A case was filed against Nefes newspaper reporter Mahir Bağış on charges of “inciting the public to hatred and hostility,” “publicly spreading misleading information,” and “insult” due to his report concerning Batman Governor Ekrem Canalp.
The rogatory hearing of the case, which was filed over the report published in Nefes newspaper titled “He had 19 million worth of work done and did not pay a single penny,” was held at the Ankara West 15th Criminal Court of First Instance.
Making his defense statement at the hearing, Bağış said, “I have been doing journalism for 5 years. I think what I did is only news reporting. I definitely do not accept the accusations attributed to me.”
What had happened?
In the report by Mahir Bağış, it was alleged that during the term of office of Batman Governor Ekrem Canalp, no payment was made in return for work worth 19 million lira carried out with a tradesman named Hakkı Şahin. In the report, it was stated that Şahin went bankrupt for this reason and could not receive the payment for his work from the municipality.
Following the publication of the report in question, a lawsuit was filed against Bağış by Governor Canalp on three separate charges.
