MLSA - In Izmir, Turkey, early morning police raids resulted in the detention of five  journalists working for Gazete Duvar, Jinnews, and Mezopotamya Agency and one media worker working for the Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party).

MLSA Legal Unit lawyers are defending two of the journalists and will be assisting the others during this time.

The journalists detained include Semra Turan, Tolga Güney and Delal Akyüz of Mezopotamya Agency, Melike Aydın of Jinnews, and Cihan Başakçıoğlu of Gazete Duvar. Additionally, Fatma Funda Akbulut, a press worker for the Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party), was also reported to be detained.

The state-run Anadolu Agency reported the detentions under the headline, "Six people detained in Izmir in an operation against the PKK terrorist organization."

The reasons for the detentions remain unclear as the case file is reportedly under a confidentiality order, and the journalists have been barred from speaking with attorneys. Legal support for the defense statements of the detained journalists will be provided by lawyers from the MLSA legal unit.
