Several journalism and free speech trials were held last week. Below is a list of the hearings monitored by Media and Law Studies Association (MLSA) last week:
Journalist Kanbal’s hearing adjourned until March 19
Second hearing of journalist Ahmet Kanbal’s trial, where he is tried on charges of “spreading terrorist propaganda,” was held at İzmir 2nd High Criminal Court. Kanbal’s lawyer Erdal Kuzu requested extra time to prepare a written defense statement. Hearing was adjourned until 19 March.

Academic Özlem Beyarslan is sentenced to 1 year and 3 months in prison
The court handed down a 1 year and 3 months prison sentence during the final hearing of the trial where Academics for Peace signatory Özlem Beyarslan has been tried on “terrorist propaganda” charges, the announcement of the verdict is postponed.

Prosecutor requests punishment of Önderoğlu, Korur-Fincancı and Nesin
The prosecutor requested the punishment of Erol Önderoğlu, Ahmet Nesin and Şebnem Korur-Fincancı, who had participated in the "Editor-in-Chief On Watch" solidarity campaign launched by Özgür Gündem newspaper, during the ninth hearing of the trial which was held at İstanbul 13th High Criminal Court.

Former MP Eren Erdem sentenced to 4 years and 2 months in prison
Former CHP MP and Karşı daily's Editor-in-Chief at the time Eren Erdem is sentenced to 4 years and 2 months in prison for “aiding and abetting a terrorist organization without being a member” during the trial targeting the since shut down Karşı daily’s staff, who are accused of FETÖ connections.
