Week of October 6: Journalism and freedom of expression trials

In the week of October 6, various trials related to journalism and freedom of expression are set to proceed. Notably, 18 journalists in Diyarbakır, facing charges of "membership in a terrorist organization" in connection with their journalistic activities, will have their trials continue.

Additionally, this week will witness the continuation of the trials involving several journalists. Rabia Çetin, represented by MLSA, is facing charges of "targeting" and "insult" at the Istanbul 23rd High Criminal Court. Semra Çelebi, represented by MLSA, accused of "publicly insulting the signs of sovereignty of the state," will have her trial continue at Istanbul Anadolu 10th Criminal Court of First Instance. Journalist Canan Kaya, whose defense is being handled by MLSA, will appear before the judge once more at Istanbul 39th Civil Court of First Instance due to the compensation lawsuit filed by Demirören.

Other journalists with ongoing trials this week include Mansur Yavaş, charged with "targeting people who took part in the fight against terrorism"; Baransel Ağca, accused of "slander"; Mustafa Büyüksipahi and Mustafa Birol Gürger, facing charges of "publicly insulting a public official"; Furkan Karabay and Faruk Eren, accused of "targeting people who took part in the fight against terrorism"; and Safiye Alagaş, charged with "membership in a terrorist organization."

Furthermore, the trial of journalist Ahmet Sever, who is the former Press Advisor to the 11th President Abdullah Gül, will continue this week. He faces charges of "insulting the president" and "insulting a public official" in relation to his book titled "İçimde Kalmasın/Tanıklıkımdır."
